How working
together goes
Most engagements follow the same arc. The point of laying it out is so you know what you're signing up for before we talk: what happens, what you get at each step, and what I'll need from you.
- 01
A first conversation
[30 min, free]You tell me what you're working on and where it's stuck. I ask a lot of questions. If I'm not the right fit, I'll say so and point you somewhere better.
YOU GET
- An honest read on whether this is a fit
- A rough sense of scope
I'LL NEED
- A few sentences on the problem beforehand
- Whoever owns the decision, if possible
- 02
Scoping
[~1 week]I write up what I think the work is, what it is not, and what done looks like. We go back and forth until it reads right to both of us.
YOU GET
- A short written scope
- A fixed price or a clear rate, and a timeline
I'LL NEED
- Access to any existing research, docs or data
- A couple of people I can talk to
- 03
Mapping the system
[1–3 weeks]Interviews and desk research turned into an actor map: who is involved, what flows between them, and where the friction is. This is usually where the real problem shows up.
YOU GET
- An interactive actor map
- A short write-up of what it shows
I'LL NEED
- Introductions to people in the system
- Feedback on drafts as they come
- 04
Designing the product
[varies]Flows, prototypes and interface design, tested with the people who will use it. Weekly check-ins, work shared as it happens rather than saved for a big reveal.
YOU GET
- Prototypes and final designs
- Weekly progress you can see
I'LL NEED
- Someone who can make product calls quickly
- Time with real users
- 05
Handoff
[1 week]Everything packaged so your team can carry it forward without me: designs, the map, decisions and why they were made.
YOU GET
- Design files and documentation
- A walkthrough with your team
I'LL NEED
- The people who will build or own it
QUESTIONS
- Do you work with early-stage teams?
- [Yes / sometimes / which stages you prefer.]
- Remote or on site?
- [Your answer, e.g. remote by default, on site for kickoff in the Mountain West.]
- What does it cost?
- [A range, or how you price: fixed per phase, day rate, retainer.]
- What if I only need the map?
- That works. Mapping on its own is a common first engagement.
Sound like a fit?
The first step is a short note. Tell me what you're working on and we'll go from there.
